The "deep reading" that media literacy education brings to documents often provides such moments.
This process of deep reading, including hearing the opinions of classmates, challenges students to go beyond their initial (and sometimes superficial) responses or interpretations.
It is much more effective to do a "deep reading" of a few media documents than a superficial analysis and discussion of many media examples.
You don't need to ask all of the Key Questions, even when doing a "deep reading" of a media document.
Finally, don't despair if the first few times that your students participate in document decoding, they seem to have trouble getting to the "deep reading" level, only responding with fairly superficial analyses or comments.
